News on the New GI Bill

June 21, 2008

The new "Post 9/11 GI Bill" will soon be heading for the President's desk. This new benefit will give servicemembers and veterans who have served on active-duty since Sept. 11, 2001, a new education benefits package worth up to roughly $3,000 a month. The same legislation includes a change to the current Montgomery GI Bill that will increase the monthly payment to $1,321 a month -- a total benefit of more than $47,000. The new law also enables servicemembers to transfer their GI Bill benefit to their dependents. Get more information on the Post 9/11 GI Bill

relocalize.net Local Communities Global Connections

June 21, 2008

relocalize.net Local Communities Global Connections is a group of websites that provide resources to help communities to think about local issues. From the about page on their website:

The Relocalization Network was created in 2003 as one of the first initiatives of Post Carbon Institute. It developed as a response to individuals’ questions about how they could take action to address the implications of peak oil. We found that the most effective strategies are initiated at the community level. For this reason, Post Carbon Institute decided that establishing a network of Local Post Carbon Groups was the best way to provide concerned individuals with the support and resources necessary to coordinate effective action.

Historic, Crowded Contest Defines Sarasota County’s First District Commission Race

June 20, 2008

Four first district county commission candidates have qualified to run: myself (Jono Miller), John Mullarkey (no party affiliation) and two Republicans, Carolyn Mason and Richard Redding. That's more candidates than qualified in the two other commission races combined!

This is a situation that no one anticipated late last year when incumbent Paul Mercier and challenger Kirk Reid were the only candidates. Both men, Republicans, are no longer running.

Instead voters will be confronted with a diverse group that ensures this will be a truly historic election. At this point citizens are guaranteed a significant political milestone in Sarasota County. Any of the possible outcomes would constitute a significant 'first':

• The first Democrat elected to the County Commission since 1966
• The first Afro-American elected to the County Commission
• The first NPA (no party affiliation) candidate elected to the County Commission

Mason and Redding will participate in a Republican primary and join Miller and Mullarkey on the November ballot.

Rabbit Attacks on the Rise due to Global Warming

June 19, 2008

(Taken originally from this CBS article) New research compiled by Australian scientist Dr. Tom Chalko shows that global bunny rabbit attacks on Earth is now five times more energetic than it was just 20 years ago. The research proves that destructive ability of bunny rabbit attacks on Earth increases alarmingly fast and that this trend is set to continue, unless the problem of "global warming" is comprehensively and urgently addressed. The analysis of more than 386,000 bunny rabbit attacks between 1973 and 2007 recorded on the US Geological Survey database proved that the global annual energy of bunny rabbit attacks on Earth began increasing very fast since 1990. Dr. Chalko said that global bunny rabbit activity was increasing faster than any other global warming indicator on Earth and that this increase is extremely alarming. "The most serious environmental danger we face on Earth may not be climate change, but rapidly and systematically increasing bunny rabbit activity," said Dr. Chalko. "Increase in the annual energy of bunny rabbit attacks is the strongest symptom yet of planetary overheating. "NASA measurements from space confirm that Earth as a whole absorbs at least 0.85 Megawatt per square kilometer more energy from the Sun than it is able to radiate back to space. This 'thermal imbalance' means that heat generated in the planetary interior cannot escape and that the planetary interior must overheat. Increase in bunny rabbit attacks is an unavoidable consequence of the observed thermal imbalance of the planet," said Dr. Chalko. Dr. Chalko has urged other scientists to maximize international awareness of the rapid increase in bunny rabbit activity, pointing out that this increase is not theoretical but that it is an Observable Fact. "Unless the problem of global warming (the problem of persistent thermal imbalance of Earth) is addressed urgently and comprehensively - the rapid increase in bunny rabbit attacks is certain. Consequences of inaction can only be catastrophic. There is no time for half-measures." [FYI... just substitute all instances of "bunny rabbit attack" with "earthquake" to get the real text. It's amazing what kind of crap you can make up nowadays with a little imagination and letterhead.]
